 Breeder's Cup Dirt Mile

Churchill  Downs November 6th  Grade 1 Race 5

One Mile 3 year old and up    

Run for the first time at a mile on the dirt and will be run out of a straightaway........which makes this..... a true test. A Fun race to watch and great race to handicap. As I write this on my blog. The field includes these horses.

 

1. Vineyard Haven........ Godolphin owns..... should improve off his third place finish in the Forego Grade 1 race. Once trained and owned by Bobby Frankel sold to Godolphin stable for 12 million dollars.........In 2008 He was thought to be the Nation's Top Kentucky Derby prospect. In 2010 Vineyard Haven coming off a eight month lay off won the James Marvin Stakes at Saratoga on opening day. He might be the fastest horse in the field. He earned a 102 Beyer number off that lay off setting a blazing .45 at the half mile mark and did not give it up. A Major contender to win his first Breeders' Cup race.

2. Gayego........ Godolphin has the one two punch. A disappointing eighth in the Golden Shaheen in Dubai in March with last year's fourth place finish in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Then Gayego showed his make up........ the winner of the Presque Isle Mile.

3. Tizway........ should love the test of a mile....who won the Kelso Handicap Grade 2 by 5 lengths in 1:34 2/5. Looked awesome that day. His first start since the Met Mile and flew at the top of the stretch to finish third behind Quality Road and MusketMan.  The scary horse at this distance......remember last year race in the Jockey Club Gold Cup when he finished behind Quality Road and Summer Bird getting third.

 

 

4. Crown Of Thorns...... please do not take this horse lightly.... a real sleeper who is proven at the distance....... He has been plagued with injuries his whole career.  Ready to rock and roll!

 

 

5. Here Comes Ben.....loves the track....... Won the Forego and has won 4 straight races...... I like this one!

 

6. Matt Flatter.......won Spend A buck Handicap by seven lengths...... loves the distance.... John Court rode him and sat right off the pace, took over at the half-mile ole and pulled clear. A five year old son of Flatter is trained by Jeff Thornbury. This is his first career stakes win earning him a starting berth in this race.

 

 

 

7. Thiskyhasnolimit ran into Lookin At Lucky in the Indiana Derby.......finished a respectable second...

 

 

8. Mine That Bird ....winner of the Kentucky Derby......trying to end his career with a win.....has been somewhat of a major disappointment......

9. Bribon .......... as I type this the owners are sitting on the fence between the Dirt Mile and Sprint.

10 Redding Colliery the winner of the Hawthorne Gold Cup......good mile with speed.

11. Dakota Phone ...... no win machine........but looked great winning at the distance of one mile and a sixteenth in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. He ran third in the Goodwood at nine furlongs.......if he shows ups....... a contender to win! A five year old gelding trained by Jerry Hoffendorfer ridden by P-Val........
