Beverly Hills Handicap

BRICE BLANC, MALIBU PIER, Winner: “It was a beautiful trip. It turned out the way I planned it on paper. I was hoping Joe (Talamo on Restless Soul) would go, like he did in the Santa Barbara. She settled down real nicely for me today and just kind of picked it up. I thought I could outkick Joe’s horse, I was more worried about Cozi Rosie getting the jump on me. When Joe picked it up on the lead, I went right on with him and I just tried to make the same move I did in the Santa Barbara. She just drew away from them.”

JOEL ROSARIO, COZIE ROSIE, Second: “(Restless Soul) dropped over immediately after the break and then I clipped heels. It’s a good thing she came back good and nothing seriously happened to her. Sometimes when they do that they can grab a quarter or something. You never know. She felt OK so I just let her find her stride. The winner just had too easy of a trip.”

CARLA GAINES, MALIBU PIER, Winner: “Neil had put blinkers on his filly (Restless Soul) and she was on the lead in the Santa Barbara, so she had natural speed. I feel very badly about what happened to Cozi Rosie, but you take your luck, don’t you? It’s a weird scenario when something like that happens because you really do feel bad for the trainer and their team. But then you go, how many times does that happen to me? I know what was wrong going into her last race but I really don’t want to talk about it. She just didn’t go into the race perfect, let’s just put it that way. Not in terms of soundness, she’s a very sound filly. We’re nominated for the Beverly D., that would give her a nice six-week break. Either that or possibly the ($250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes).’

JOHN SADLER, COZI ROSIE, Second:” She looks OK. The start hurt her and then again she gets no pace. (Restless Soul) would have come down if we lost the (place) photo, but we won the photo so you can’t take the horse down.”

Notes: The win was Blanc’s second in a row in the Beverly Hills and his third overall. He won with Happyanunoit in 2000 and Turning Top in 2010…The $750,000 Beverly D. will be run Aug. 13 at Arlington Park while the $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes will be run Aug. 14 at Del Mar.
