COLONEL JOAN TRIES DIRT IN GRADE II LA CANADA

Colonel Joan makes her first stakes start on dirt when she runs in next Saturday’s Grade II La Canada Stakes for 4-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles.

Eoin Harty feels she’ll give a good account of herself.

“She works well on the main track,” the trainer said. “I see no reason she won’t be able to handle it . . . she’s by Colonel John and he’s a multiple Grade I winner on the dirt.”

Six of Colonel Joan’s 11 career starts have come on turf, including a third-place finish at 37-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November 2013.

Harty trained Colonel John to win the 2008 Santa Anita Derby. Colonel Joan, a bay filly bred in Kentucky by Phil Owens, is owned by Eoin’s wife, Kathy, and Mark DeDomenico.

“My mother-in-law’s name is Joan, so instead of Colonel John, we named the filly after her,” Harty said. “She’s thrilled.”

No more so than Eoin and Kathy would be should Colonel Joan win the La Canada.

ELVIS IS ‘IN THE BUILDING’ AND HAVING SOLID MEET

Tom Knust has heard the lines about how “Elvis has left the building” umpteen times.

The agent who represents jockey Elvis Trujillo is used to it, same as he’s becoming accustomed to the 30-year-old Panamanian making a mark for himself on the highly competitive Southern California circuit, finishing high in the standings at every meet since the two paired up a couple years ago.

Trujillo (yes, his mother named him after The King) scored his second stakes win of the 11-day old meet Saturday when he rode Calculator to an impressive victory in the Grade III Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds at one mile. This could be his Derby horse.

“He’s got a good combination,” Knust said: “A very sound work ethic and talent as a rider. Put those two things together and you’re going to be successful here.

“He rides for Jerry Hollendorfer, Peter Miller and Doug O’Neill, but we also win races for smaller stables, like Bobby Wayne Grayson, Jorge Periban and Rafael Becerra. We’re riding for some good people and we’re very happy with where we’re at right now.”

Miller echoed Knust’s sentiments after Trujillo rode 3-5 favorite Calculator to his maiden victory in the Sham, overcoming the risk of a wide trip throughout to score by 4 ¼ lengths.

The Equibase chart read: “CALCULATOR five wide into the first turn, stalked outside foes on the backstretch, bid three deep leaving the second turn to gain the lead and won clear under urging.”

Added Miller, who also saddled Rock Shandy to finish second and St. Joe Bay to finish fourth in the Sham: “I was very concerned with where Calculator was on the first turn, because it looked like five or six of them were sending, and I said, ‘Oh, no. We’re going to be 10-wide.’

“But Elvis saw the same thing and he adjusted and brought the horse back into maybe the three or four path. We had a wide trip, but there’s less trouble out wide.”

Through Saturday, Trujillo was tied for second in Santa Anita’s standings with eight victories, five behind perennial leader Rafael Bejarano.

GLORY A POPULAR NAME IN THOROUGHBRED RACING

Glory, ridden by 2014 Eclipse Award apprentice jockey finalist Drayden Van Dyke and trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, won a six furlong maiden race Saturday by two lengths in her second career start. Rick Porter (Fox Hill Farms), who raced 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, owns Glory, a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of premier sire Tapit.

“I figured Glory is a name that surely must have been used before, probably many times, in Thoroughbred racing,” said Jon White, who makes Santa Anita’s morning line and provides pre-race television commentary each race for the track’s simulcast network. “So I checked it out at equibase.com and found they have six Thoroughbreds named Glory listed.

“In addition to the Glory who won Saturday, Equibase lists a filly named Glory by the sire Knight foaled in 1993. She never raced. There was another filly named Glory by Coastal foaled in 1983. That filly won once, a maiden race at Philadelphia Park in 1986. That’s filly’s sire, Coastal, won the 1979 Belmont Stakes, with Spectacular Bid having to settle for third when he was attempting to sweep the Triple Crown.

“Equibase also has Thoroughbreds named Glory foaled in 2004 in Peru, 1986 in France, and 1978 in Argentina.

“I also checked brisnet.com. Brisnet has three more Thoroughbreds named Glory foaled in the United States in 1886, 1922 and 1945. The 1945 foal, a filly by the great sire Bull Lea, was bred by famed Calumet Farm.”

White said that he then also checked pedigreequery.com and found four more Thoroughbreds named Glory in Great Britain (foaled in 1919, 1941, 1958 and 1982), two more in Australia (1900 and 2005) and one more each in Argentina (1962), Barbados (1957), Brazil (1958), Chile (1939), Cyprus (1997), France (1910), Germany (1986), Ireland (2002), Italy (1985), Japan (1958), Russia (1900) and Yugoslavia (1999).

In all, White found 27 Thorougbreds worldwide named Glory through the years.

Salvador Iniguez has been banned three days (Jan. 15, 16 and 17) for causing interference board Rock N Bunny in Thursday’s sixth race . . . Veteran jockeyAgapito Delgadillo, back from a vacation in Mexico, is expected to resume riding at Santa Anita Friday. He will be represented by agent Joe Griffin, who also has Tiago Pereira . . .
