Breeders' Cup Classic

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman's 4-year-old McKinzie, dominant winner of last Saturday's Whitney (G1) at Saratoga, strengthened his lead over Thunder Snow (IRE) in the latest Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings poll, while the Whitney runner-up, Yoshida (JPN), surged to No. 3 in the standings.

Trained by three-time Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winning-trainer Bob Baffert, McKinzie won the 1 1/8-mile Whitney by 1 3/4 lengths for his fourth Grade 1 score in his first start since a runner-up finish in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) on June 8 at Belmont Park. A bay son of 2006 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Street Sense, McKinzie garnered 254 votes this week, 42 votes more than Godolphin's 5-year-old Thunder Snow (212 votes), who was scratched from the Whitney on the morning of the race due to an elevated temperature. The two-time Dubai World Cup (G1) winner will likely make his next start in the Woodward (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 31.
