The most talented stable Jeff Bonde has had in his 35 years as a thoroughbred trainer has sent him flying from his base of operations at Barn 7 on the Alameda County Fairgrounds in his hometown of Pleasanton.
"I've kind of been on an airplane for the past few months," Bonde said one recent morning while horses and exercise riders moved in and out of the barn. "That part is hard because I have a bunch of kids (four teenage sons). But it's that time of year when you have to go where you can maximize your product."
This week, Bonde is at Churchill Downs, where on Saturday, Twice the Appeal will be his first Kentucky Derby starter, and Sway Away has an outside chance also to make the field of 20
