Derby Day At Santa Anita Park
SANTA ANITA DERBY DAY
The Santa Anita Derby, started in 1935, has produced 15 Kentucky Derby winners, including eight who won both races. The most recent to win both the Santa Anita and Kentucky Derby was Sunday Silence in 1989.
Race 1
Mr. Katz has been given some time off for Marty Jones. He usually has his stable fire fresh after a lay-off. A eight time winner on turf who shortens up to one mile should be pressing the pace from the start. Joe Talamo re-rides Mr. Katz. Job Boss claimed by Doug O'Neil for $20K hikes him up to $25K. Job Boss main drawback is that his is trying to win his first turf race out of nine starts. Bejarano rides Job Boss who should be closing turning for home. El Merito has not won since coming over to the states. He drops in class after facing better. A Player. Sir Bell has been off more then one year. His works outs indicate that he just might out-run his double digit odds. He has the ground saving rail with tactical speed to win this wide open cheap turf claiming race with a number of horses that look off form and coming back after lay-offs.
1. Mr. Katz 2. Sir Bell 3. Job Boss
Race 2
Flightofalifetime ran into a buzz saw when Macleans Music posted a speed figure of 114. He will be a short price today after posted a 95 Beyer Figure. Patriot's Voyage will run with his stablemate Flightofalifetime. He draws the short straw with is the rail for his debut. He looks like a runner but will need his bets to beat Flightofalifetime. Steve Asmussen trains the E Dubai colt Dr Ballenger. He sports a solid workout tab. He has the look of a bright future. Street Rocket by Street Cry debuts with a good pedigree and solid works.
1. Flightofalifetime 2. Patroit's Voyage 3. Dr Ballenger
Race 3
Unzip Me carries 127 pounds today. Ten more pounds then any filly or mare in the race. She is the top turf sprinter on the West Coast. You got to beat her to win this race. She loves this track having won 5 out of 6 turf races. Tanda looks her main rival with Separted Forest. I have followed Dan Hendrick's filly Tanda. She has been off more then ten months. If she is fit and ready she has the talent to take this race.
1. Unzip Me 2. Tanda 3. Separted Forest
Race 4
Seven Secrets drops in class with enough speed to clear this field to be a main threat to steal this race. Beyond Loaded is seeking two in a row at this level. The horse to beat. A Cat Named Snipe will battle for the lead with Seven Secrets. He is in form and fit.
1. Beyond Loaded 2. Seven Secrets 3. A Cat Named Snipes
Longshot Brinson
Race 5
Peter Miller is a trainer who gets his horses to fire first time out! Gifted Crusader fits this profile to a perfect tee. Check out his works with P-Val in the saddle. A wide open maiden turf race. Bellingham with Green Cat looks like the one to fear. Bellingham trained by Sadler gets Joel to re-ride this five year old horse that was hammered down to the favorite in his debut. Craigmont gets back on the turf after switching to the main track because of the weather. I expect he will be a good price play with these. Ghost Rider by Ghostzipper should love the turf. He is bred to win early. Rock Off is another first time starter that looks live. He is bred to win early by Rock Hard Ten......... Check out this dudes works in the morning time. Mr. Make Believe another Rock Hard Ten colt who looks live.
1. Craigmont 2. Bellingham 3. Rock Off
Mr. Make Believe long look!
Race 6
The pace looks hot and fast. Blake beat high price claimers. He is working solid for his comeback in 2011. He should get a good trip from the outisde post but there is other speed in this race. Galientos is speed ..... Come Catch this dude.... and he just might get brave on the front end. Tab him if the track is wet. Off The Wall ran to his pedigree wiring a field of maidens. He faces winners for the first time today. Candy's Pleasure hooks up in a speed dual. The race sets up for a mid pack closer like Position A .......Locksley Hall ........and Detroit Danny.......
1. Position A 2. Detroit Danny 3. Lockeley Hall
Cost Of Ticket $15.00 OUT
Race 7
Caracortado is the stand-out in the Arcadia Stakes Grade 2. He is one of the West Coast top turf milers. Leroy's Dynameaux a horse I have followed from last year looks to be spotted to run a big race after prepping short. He needs this distance of one mile to win! Jeranimo looks to be Caracortado main rival with LeRoy. Jeranimo ran to good his last race to lose to Fluke and Caracortado. Any slight improvement will put him in the winner's circle.
1. Caracortado 2. Jeranimo 3. LeRoy's Dynameaux
Race 8
Coo Cachoo is the speed of this race. His last race was flat and off form. He has come back in the morning and posting solid work outs. First Dude trained by Bob Baffert looks like a short price stand out in this field. On paper he is the horse to beat. He shortens up in distance which should suit his tactical running style.
Pick Four
8th 5
9th 1,5,6,7
10th 10
11th 9,13
Race 9
The Providencia Stakes for three year old fillies at the distance of one mile and a eighth on the turf. I mention the distance because on paper Cambina is seeking her third straight win. She is the modern day Silky Sullivan and will be flying late at the wire. The distance is my concern but having said this she is the filly to fear. I love her last two races. Bonita Star looked awesome winning her last race. She should relish this longer distance from the ground saving rail. She has a big chance to win this stakes race. Wave Of Applause has the right speed with tactical speed to make her a solid contender. The longshot is James Cassidy's filly with Victor riding Whisper Louise. She has been freshen up and gets weight off after having run with 124 to 131 pounds on her back in Europe. I love her turf pedigree.
1. Cambina 2. Bonita Star 3. Whisper Louise
Longshot Hard To Resist......
Race 10 Derby Fever Is In The Air!
Bench Points showed me a game race last time off coming back after a debut from the summer time. He has beat up on Cal Breds and many bettors will over-look him because of the breeding and the state restricted races he has run with. Bring It On! Comma To The Top just might rebound with this field. Can He run on dirt....... which will be answered today. He is the main pace factor on the front-end. Silver Medallion is making his first start since switching to the Asmussen barn. He won the Eddie Logan and the El Camino Real Derby. He can run on the turf and on the syth track but what about this track. ......Mr. Commons has jump to the front of the line in a big hurry. He scored a good looking allowance win but I see him better on the turf. ..... but he is a main contender in this spot. Anthony's Cross added blinkers his last race going long for the first time. He has the right closing style with the excellent pedigree to make him a threat to win this race. A Major Player!!
1. Bench Points 2. Mr. Commons 3. Anthony's Cross
Race 11
With low odds Today Hey Maria drops from maiden special weight to maiden 30. Gaines and Sutherland team up for the winning conncetions on Derby Day. Silver Luna is better sprinting then routing. She cuts back to a sprint after being claimed out of her last race by Knapp. Corey N rides from the rail. She just might get brave on the front end. Black Wildcat looks like the first time starter that has been training solid for her debut. Do not take lightly this daughter of Storm Cat. She is bred to win early and bred for speed.
1. Hey Maria 2. Black WildCat 3. Silver Luna
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN TODAY!!!
