Wednesday Del Mar

" Where The Turf Meets The Surf."

On Sunday the Bank was a positive $106 in the Black. Sunday's bet include losing the Pick Three and Pick four tickets which totaled $10. I place $20 to place on Pedaltothemetal ROI of $20. I place $20 on Afleet Ruler to place and the return was $34. The last race I place a $20 place ticket on the winner Classy Bobby and returned $52. Bank started with $606 minus $10= $596+$20+$34+$52 which equals $702. Bank starts week 2 at $702. Wednesdays card looks like on paper a Chalk Charlie day.  The Wicker is competitive with a number of live horses if Gallant Son does not win. If you remember the Inglewood Stakes did not have a very competitive group of entries........first race the new face looks tough Cathy's Crunches. The third race looks like chalk with Capital Account.

Race 1       Five Half Furlong Starter Allowance
I had always like this under-rated trainer Jorge Periban who sends out Michailasheartlite. Joel Rosario takes the call after she had a melt down in the Landaluce we just might get a hint of a price. This starter allowance is filled with horses who just broke there maidens. Cathy's Crunches a new face winning her debut at Calder by 9 lengths. She posted a strong Beyer speed number. She is the one to fear shipping in from Calder and Jerry Hoffendorfer trains. Alaska Miss a winners 3 months ago and has been freshened up and this is the first time she tackles this condition. Pat Valenzuela takes the mount from Tyler Baze.

            1. Cathy's Crunches  2. Michanasheartlite

Race 2       One Mile Sixteenth Turf Maiden Special
The pace scenario looks like Prince of Gotham is the speed and will take them as far as he can go.......Papa Lev goes from outside to inside saving ground on the rail. I think he is the one to beat today. Barry Abrams barn sends out a Unusual Heat colt The Unusual One with fast bullets works.  Checkmark is a colt stretching out after a long lay off. He almost won his maiden his last race at Hollywood Park closing on the rabbits. I like Papa Lev and Checkmark and my long shot is The Unusual One. Minister D' Oro is a contender I just  like Papa Lev over Minister D' Oro.

                 1. Papa Lev 2. The Unusual One

Race 3         Six Half Furlong Allowance
Capital Account looks like a horse climbing up the class ladder. He cost 330K as a yearly. He won his debut with strong Beyer speed number. He was heavily bet in his debut and now fires a sharp work out on July 19th. What's not to like? Patriotic Soldier will be stalking the speed and if Capital Account wheels do not like the poly track Patriotic Soldier will be game at the wire. I like his morning work out since he has been freshened up since May.  Equipaparo is the horse in form and fit trained by the deadly trainer/jockey combo of AC and Berrio.

             1. Capital Account

Race 4         One Mile Claimer (20K)
Please remember that the race condition is non winners of two at the mile. It is hard to go against the leading trainer at Del Mar John Sadler when he claims a horse first time out and then goes from a sprint to a route. This is the case with California Soldier. But no really value today but he looks awful tough to me. He has hit the board 10 out of his short 14 race career. Lav Dragon which I singled him in a pick three on my blog won his last race. He looked great winning with a somewhat troubled trip was steadied down the lane. He was claimed by Peter Miller and takes the mandatory jump in class. Ministers Power at this level looms dangerous. He is switching for off the turf to run on the poly track today. Brother Louie I will pass! Litecorr has the route experience and has been freshened up and trained by Kitchingman. He sports a sharp July 17th workout but seems to be lite on his speed figures. Cookies Rules has a sharp July 13th bullet but Mike Smith jump off and does not re-ride the horse. I wonder why?...... He has been Fanning's main man lately.

         1. California Soldier  2. Lav Dragon 3. Ministers Power

Race 5         Six Furlong Maiden (25K)
A contentious race with 2 horses dropping from 50k to the bottom feeders. Mytigersnosissy which ran at Del Mar last year. He was well bet in debut and I expect he might be the favorite today. Pride of Wilshire was claimed for 32k and ran 2 respectable races at Hollywood. He shows tactical speed and might just sit off the pace and close down the lane. Mister Jazz fits at this level and if the droppers are not sound and fit might just be the one to fear at the wire. Oh Now look at his bullet which makes him hard to throw out. There are 2 first time starters that I like one by Unbridlied out of the dam Five Star Fund. Mike Mitchell is the trainer and he usually has them cranked up and fit first time out. Rathman just might and I say might be a runner. Swongs is the first time starter that I like.

                          1. Minister Jazz  2.Oh Now  3. Swongs

Pick four  1,9,10 with 2,9 with 9 with 7,9

Race 6         Six Furlong Starter Allowance
Looks who's back Patrica V. in the saddle. No matter how you feel about what he did to his skills on a horse and the demons inside his head he was and is: a excellent gate jockey and might just be on the short list of one of the best jockeys........ of all time. When Vladimir took off the blinkers on Movie Duty she became a different filly.... a filly with game down the stretch. Last week I had Ninth Infantry who won a 50k sprint on the turf .....Word Association last race was with Ninth and had a horrible trip in her race. She was stopped until it was too late to clear down the lane. I expect today she is prime fit and in decent form to win. Flashy Traveler race in a open non winners of one and yes drops to this maiden 40K starter. If the speed meltdown I like her closing style. Ascot's Highflye looks like a player. She just broke her maiden and posted a strong speed number. She tries this condition for the first time. This is a excellent betting race to start a late Pick three!

   1. Word Association   2. Movie Duty  3. Ascot's Highflye

Race 7         One Mile Turf Wicker Stakes
Let's try the Jay Totter method of this competitive one mile turf restricted stakes race.

1. Blue Chagall has a ground saving tactical trip on the rail. A plus is he does like the Del Mar turf and seems fit and in somewhat good form. He was in too deep of waters in the Shoemaker because Grade One horses entered that race.

2. Aggie Engineer looks to be the speed of this race and might just have a uncontested lead. I would not quit my day job or hold my breath when he comes down the stretch and get's over taken late.

3. Quindici Man I picked hitting the board on my blog with Gallant Man in the Grade 3 Inglewood. In fact I posted all three horses that day and hit the tri which I did not play paying over $1,200 a change. Go figure!

4. A Lil Dumaani is stretching out for Doug O'Neil. He has been hitting on all engines at Del Mar. On Sunday do you remember Hey Elvis stretching out to two turns. He won!

5. Noble Court is another sprinter stretching out on turf. He won on the Poly Track going a mile at yes at Del Mar, so he can do the distance.

6. Gallant Son the horse I picked in the Inglewood and is the horse to beat . He is the only horse in this field that has won a stakes race in 2010. The conditions fit him to a tee!

7. Red Door Drive the horse that might just beat the favorite. He should have a excellent position stalking the rabbit and waiting to jump in at the quarter pole and close down at the wire!

8. Riviera Cocktail looms the dark horse and has been freshed up for this by Neil Drysdale. He must get into the bit early and not be too far off the lead to have a chance to beat 6 and 7.

9. Ferneley the class of the race and if he is ready and semi cranked up and on the muscle.......... Beware!

10 Golden Balls a horse I have always like....... and a bummer post position for him. The good thing is that he is a closer and might just save ground on the first turn. My concern is that he will be too far back and not get fast factions to run at. I still like him for my long shot here.

With A Lil Dumaami scratching out of the Wicker the speed scenario changes with Aggie Engineer and Red Door Drive the rabbits of this race.

             1. Ferneley

Race 8         Five Half Furlong Maiden (40K)

If Offlee Wilds Boys draws in his first two races at Hollywood he ran respectable races which makes him a contender today!  His last race at the county fair he threw in a bad race with no excuses I can see. Sweet Tart drops from maiden special and might just be the betting favorite. I like Offlee Wilds Boys over Sweet Tart. If you have followed my blog I like Curly Boy because of his breeding with A.P. Indy out of a mare Smart Strike. He was scratch his first race when he was warming up. He then enter a maiden race at this level and one race does not make a career.... I wish he showed more speed in his work outs in the morning. I assume maybe the trainer works  his horses in a semi slow manner.  Maybe this might be assuming to much on my end.  I will give him one more race today. One of these days Georgie's Friend who shows speed will not stop. I respect the maiden special weight dropper on the rail Tahoe Yodler. Tab the jockey switch to Bejarano with a horse who had a troubled trip his last race Swiss Hero. As for the first time starters I have always followed the Summer Squall babies.......and Beer Friday is one of them. The dam Bold Tropic has had 6 starters and 5 have won.... not bad!

                    1. Beer Friday  2. Curly Boy  3. Offlee Wilds Boys
