SUNDAY SANTA ANITA PARK

RACE 1

A 16 G claiming sprint for fillies and mare three years old and up.

I watched Sugar Spice last race as she pressed a super fast pace with Clearly Confused......it was a strong performance because she was pressing the pace with another.......that horse who won Clearly Confused came back and won a 25 G claiming race. Mulhall has had a horrible record this year at this meet......She is better then what her record tells us. Sugar Spice second start here after a four month lay off should be on the muscle and not tire like she did in her last race.

Sidebar looks like a scary rival if Spice falters again down the lane. She fly home against allowance types finishing third this month. She won a starter allowance in Feb. pressing the pace so she has tactical speed options here.

Queen Of The Hill a filly that I bet before smoked *8 G claimers then was claimed out of that race by Doug O'Neil. Doug hikes her up in class might be a very positive sign of her fitness.

The best closer is Secret Genius trained by Knapp......I have bet her before at big odds.....She is game and  PACE WILL MAKE THIS RACE.

Handicapped this race when Sugar Spice was in the race...that is not the case now........ The speed is Queen Of The Hill...come catch her.....Lady Vivien trained by David Hoffman likes this track.....has a touch of back class......I'am concern with the huge drop in class by Sidebar......if she is fit she will take down this field.

              1. Lady Vivien
              2. Side Bar
              3. Queen Of The Hill     won

             Long shot Secret Genuis

.

RACE 2

A maiden special weight turf sprint for three year old's and up.

Sadler has two contender's in this hill-side sprint. Sunny Kat who I bet last summer. He is the son of Kitten Joy returns with a series of long nice drills.....He was a promising two year old as Joe Talamo rides him. John then sends out Mal Verde a son of  Whatthescript has been training near Fallbrook with razor sharp drills........He should relish the turf coupled with the hot bug boy on him with weight off makes him a major player.

Marty Jones when he teams up with Bejarano the horse is live. Willy Be Wild sired by Wild Again has slow works which is the norm for Jones.

Julio sends out Drysdale sired by Smart Strike.......bred to love the turf......ultra nice drills who gets the garden spot on the outside and great place to be if you are a first time starter. He sends out Relative Time that has been gelded....major equipment change......has the most racing experience of this field.

              1. Drysdale
              2. Sunny Kat
              3. Mal Verde    won

              Long Shot  Willy Be Wild
.

RACE 3

A 32 G claiming sprint for three year old's and up running on the main track.

This field has plenty of speed signed up.......Julio's Gold draws the inside and he will have to be sent early to clear the traffic.......He runs good on turf or dirt so there is no problem with the surface. I expect Vicky Victoria to try to clear early so she hopes that she can not be outrun by Gold. Small Moves has speed and will take them as far as she can go.......interesting that Tyler re-rides her after a horrible last race against better. Art Sherman sends out a interesting filly Milady Maid. She has both speed or tactical speed to draft behind the rabbits.....I like her.......win early pedigree that can climb the class level. Time For Angie bounce last time when she faced much better company.......I expect she will be in the game from the start.

            1. Milady Maid
            2. Time For Angie
            3. Julio's Gold.....the one to catch

            Long Shot Rhodium

..

RACE 4

A restricted non winner's of two running one mile on the turf. A suspect hard race to trust...start of the pick six.....

Gelila working at Los Al.....has a win over this course......Her running style is a strong closer.......needs her best effort to win.

The speed of the speed is Dream Baby........need to catch her to win this in a race void of pure sprint speed.

I will take a long shot Summer Fascination who has a fairly good turn of foot.....

              1.  Summer Fascination
              2.  Vision Of Candy
              3.  Commander Cloud    won

.

.

RACE 5

A high price maiden claiming sprint on the dirt for fillies and mares.

I bet Fly To Freedom before.......Peter Miller is excellent with come-backers...in a race void of speed.....Let's take her on top.

           1. Fly To Freedom
           2. Charissa
           3. Doris Johnson

RACE 6

A maiden special weight turf sprint down the hill for fillies and mares. This is a talented field of fillies and mares...many contender's and very few pretender's so take note of this.

The first time starter Burning Arch is a blue-blood out of the Hollendofer stable.....this daughter of Arch gets the money man Mike Smith to ride.......She has plenty of works that tell me that she is fit....He has her cranked up today as Gary rides her.

Richard Mandella sends out Miss Super Quick that ran strong in her debut.

Not Too Shiny had a race under her belt where she set a fast hot pace before fading.......I expect she will improve with her second start.

Daylight's Coming earned a improved Beyer after her last comeback race....excellent pedigree

Tough Race!

          1. Burning Arch
          2. Miss Super Quick
          3. Daylight's Coming

          Long Shot Not Too Shiny

.

RACE 7

A 32 G claiming sprint on the dirt for three year old and up.

A tough race with Peacnick and Too Fast To Pass should be included as the favorite's.......I have bet Life's A Riley before...He has four months to get fresh and his head together......Bill spots his horse's where they can win.......I like the main man jockey for Bill riding him.

           1. Life's A Riley
           2 Too Fast To Pass
           3. Peacenick

.

RACE 8           WILSHIRE STAKE GRADE 3

The feature race is the Grade 3 Wilshire which is one mile on the turf for fillies and mares.

           1. Parranda
           2. Moone's My Name
           3. Theatre Star
.

RACE 9

The bottom level of maiden claimer's sprinting on the main track ends the first week of the Spring meet at the Great Race Place. Let's take a first time starter that the trainer is hitting at 50%.........Lady Lois morning line is 20 to 1 but has good pedigree top to bottom.....

             1. Lady Lois
             2. West Coast Storm
             3. My Wish Comes True

.

SATURDAY GOLD RUSH DAYS AT THE GREAT RACE PLACE

RACE 1

A excellent betting card that starts off with a high price optional claimer N1X for three year old fillies.

Famous Alice the daughter of Kitten's Joy stretches out to one mile.......bred to get this distance. Tom takes off the blinkers after I watched her get second going down the hill in the Sweet Life Stakes with Smith riding her. Proctor who came here bought along the red hot bug boy Drayden Van Dyke. He is the real deal and it has been fun watching him improve day by day.....She gets weight off as Proctor has put nine work outs with her in the morning. She is the filly to catch as this race is a race with no speed.

Neil Drysdale sends out the import Amnesia who gets first time Lasix.....Her workout look very impressive......

John Sadler looks to have a keeper with Vanlose Stairway. She is sired by the Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom..........excellent pedigree...... She flew home finishing first full of run........in her debut. Nicolas Gonzalo a bug gets weight off.......bred to get this distance.....

I expect that maybe Princess Genevieve will try to go with Famous Alice..if this happens then the whole picture will change.........Pace will make this race.

     1. Famous Alice      won
     2. Vanloose Stairway
     3. Amnesia

     Long shot Princess Genevieve

RACE 2

A talented field of state restricted maiden special weight sprint open to three year old's and up. This is a contentious competitive state bred maiden sprint at six and a half furlongs.

K Thirty Eight and Next Book exits the race last month.....they finished a neck apart. K Thirty Eight.......38 is kin to a stake winner to Soldier's Kiss. His morning works are fast and long which I like to see in workouts. Next Book is struck down on the rail and will need to get out fast and quick so he will not get into trouble. The horses that have racing experience are theses two!

Three FTS's that look like scary runners to me is Chattering Gambler trained by Bell is sired by Dixie Union.....bred to be quick and his babies win early. I love the drills in the morning...beware!

Sir Perservere trained by Marty Jones has slows works but this trainer works them slow.......Bejarano and Jones team up on this first time starter.

The scary first time starter to me is Warren's three year old gelding Burnaroundtheedges. The dam Unusual Heat can run on any surface but loves the dirt. I love the long seven furlong works...two bullets.......and gets the garden spot on the outside......The red hot Joel Talamo is Warrens main man.....

          1 Burnaroundtheedges    won
          2. K 38
          3. Chatting Gambler

          long shot Sir Perservere
.

RACE 3

A short dash for maiden's at five and half furlongs.

15 Black trained by Bonde sired by Bertrano exits a key maiden race where the second finisher came back and won. Then put together a strong performance here on Sunday. His third start with speed makes him a solid contender. The drop to the bottom and being Gelded just might do the trick.

Dead Easy has not race since a year ago....Richard Rosales is a under-rated trainers......Easy goes from route to a short dash......never has raced this low........The hot Edwin knows is one well and climbs back on him.........plenty of morning works which I expect he will give his best performance in this race.

Oscar Garcia sends out Nonno Tunaga has speed......This 5 year old finished second at this level......He was well clear of the third place horse......He gets a half more furlongs but I expect he will stick around turning for home.

The scary first time starter is Boom Boys with two fast ultra nice gate works which means that he is fit for Doug O'Neil.....sold for 32 G's......He shows up at the bottom......

Pace will make this race as  Kanuck Kowboy drops after his debut against much better and faster horse......Pender takes off the blinkers and I like bullet gate work and then the fast five furlong work. He has speed which is a major asset at this distance.

               1. 15 Black
               2. Deadeasy
               3. Boom Boy

Long Shot   Dehere Is Gone   won

.

RACE 4        FRAN'S VALENTINE STAKES

One mile on the turf for state bred fillies and mares. Unusual Way and Halo Dolly finished one two......Halo Dolly turned up short and could not catch Unusual Way.....Halo Dolly is the class of the race and the switch to Bejarano. Ciao Bella Luna trained by Miller has tactical speed. She can get one mile and draft behind the speed.......which is Unusual Way........the one to catch.....Unusual Hottie I have always like...She is one game filly and if someone goes with Way then look to the second horse's behind her.

PACE WILL MAKE THIS RACE.....SO TAKE NOTE!

            1. Halo Dolly
            2. Unusual Way..........catch her
            3. Unusual Hottie

            Long Shot Dancingtothestars     won

.

RACE 5          TIZNOW STAKE

One mile on the main track state restricted for four year old's and up. A small field of six enters this stake race. All six runner's have a legitimate shot to win this contentious wide open Tiznow.

Rousing Sermon I have bet before........He seemed to be in Graded stakes that was over his head......today is not the case. He was in too deep in the Big Cap.....Bejarano and Jerry are hot when they team up together.

Storm Fighter looks to be the controlling speed ......He is in razor sharp form....I like the last five furlong bullet work...He looks ready to fire.

Kate's Event I always love this one......a late sprinter that seems to run better over the cushion track then the dirt.

China Prince is the up-setter if he takes to the dirt....This four year old gelding trained by Craig has him ready to run a big performance...bred to take to the dirt......He has been training over this course with long long works which I like to see.....

         1. China Prince
         2. Rousing Sermon
         3. Storm Fighter          won

.

RACE 6

A state bred maiden special weight turf race for three year old's.

When Sadler claims a horse for 50 g's you must take a long look at him. He claimed Prospector Alley in his debut......He was off slow then hesitated before running.......the race....He gave the field a five second starts before he started to run.....He flew home at seven furlongs getting fourth......It was a good performance. He then had a trouble trip on the turf at this distance with Bejarano riding him. His last race was a maiden 50 G one mile route where he finished second.  The red hot bug boy with weight off rides him.....a good value bet.

            1. Prospector Alley
            2. Durango Flyer
            3. It's The Living Water

.

RACE 7         SPRING FEVER STAKES

Mark Mines looks to be the speed of the speed......She will need to clear early from the rail. She is game on any surface.........Frank travels down from up north to ride her.

Top Kisser tries the dirt for the first time.......I have her on my watch list.......Jerry has given her time off and comes in fresh.......strong works as the last time I have seen her is at the beach........Jerry trains and Corey rides as she goes route to sprint.....She is talented.

Warren's Venda freshen since Dec. drops from graded company to run here......She has a excellent turn of foot and if the speed melt- down then watch out for her. The only time she ran on dirt she won by seven!

            1. Top Kisser        won
            2. Warren's Venda
            3. Miner's Mark

Our Pure Creation is the long shot
.

RACE 8

A first level Cal Bred allowance turf race going one mile and a eighth.

I was impressed with The Mad Hungarian who won two races ago. He was never in his last race as he was taken out early on post ten. A son of Dixie Chatter out of the mare Stephen Got Even should take to the turf. Hector trains this colt........a big good looking colt.

Control Seeker a true pro needed last race....I expect that he will give us a better performance this time around.

Volkonsky gets back to the turf where I think he runs better.....Bejarano re-rides.......

Take note there is no stand outs in this race.

            1. The Mad Hungarian
            2. Volkonsky
            3. Control Seeker

RACE 9        MELAIR STAKES

One mile and a sixteenth on the main track for three year old's fillies. This a a great betting race with many contender's and very few pretender's.

Rovenna a true sprinter going long today......She is more mature and one classy filly.

Wonderful Lie trained by Blacker was impressive in her debut flying late to beat a field of ten. She is bred to run all day long.......Corey who won with her climbs on......Dan works them slow.....so no concern from me.

Swiss Lake Yodeler was hot as a two year old......She is three and to drop in class after running over her head in graded races......Jerry and Bejarano team up.

            1. Wonderful Lie
            2. Rovenna                 won
            3. Swiss Lake Yolder

            Long Shot   Magic Spot

RACE 10         SNOW CHIEF STAKES

The co feature for three year old colt's.......nine furlongs on the turf.........

I was very impressed with how Patriot's Rule smoked a starter allowance......He is bred to get the distance and bred for the turf. He tried the turf for his last race and should not have won it because of the post and the ton's of trouble he had......He found a home on the turf.

            1. Patriot's Rule
            2. Aotearoa
            3. Tamanrando

Long Shot here is Awesome Returns

.

RACE 11

A state restricted 20 G maiden sprint........ I like the long shot Siempre Mio who had been training strong for new trainer.....sired by Dixie Union........love the jockey that takes the call.

            1. Siempre Mio
            2. Southern Sunrise
            3. Jovita's

.

GOLD RUSH DAYS

FRIDAY NIGHT AT SANTA ANITA PARK

RACE 1

                                 UPDATED

The first baby race of the spring meet.........four and half furlongs for two year old fillies. With the pedigree Robo Girl sired by Bushwacker who's to have some fast drills in the morning. She is a half sister to a stake winner when she was two. City Ride trained by Harrington looks like she will be fast and quick from the gate.

Sweet MZ Poppet mom was sired by Old Topper who wins early and is bred to be quick......She has some fast blow out drills over this track......George Lopez a sneaky old timer can get them to race early.......I like the jockey Delgadillo Agapiton riding her today.

Take The Spring kin is a stakes winner filly Repo......She won her debut four year ago........

Baby races today is your call ...Play or Pass...... I like Robo Girl.

            1. Robo     Bet across the board   won

RACE 2

A 30 G maiden claimer sprinting on the dirt which is open to three year old's and up. This looks to me to be a weak maiden sprint........The horse's that has the running experience to me is Take A Risk......and Ready To Jam. Take A Risk cuts back in distance to six furlongs....Edwin jumps off this one and another and does not ride in this race.......Risk changes barns.....his running style is a mid pack closer...He will be closing late.

Ready To Jam gets the rail but has speed to clear early.....He comes in fresh for George......has the pedigree to win early as he is sired by More Then Ready....George trains and owns and has strung together a nice series of drills to get him ready and fit.

The first timers looks to me to be Stadtpark who has impressed the clocker's at Los Alamito...Paul has put a ultra fast gate work in him.....his main man is up in the irons.

Cache Wanted a first timer has made it to the track at age four. Victor Garcia can get them to win.......I like the long works he has strung together on Cache Wanted. I like the jockey.

Live Lucky sired by Decarachy who has babies that win early.......Hess and Joe hook up on this FTS.......looks like a runner to me.

             1. Take A Risk    won
             2. Stadtpark
             3. Cached Wanted

RACE 3

Seven furlongs at the claiming price of 12 G's for fillies and mares on the main track.

This is a tough race because of the distance and the level. On paper...Magic Number claimed by Belvoir goes first off the claim......and Bejarano chose her.

This race is filled with speed types...... I like She's A Go Girl.........needs to clear from the rail.......She is fit and has current form.

           1. She's A Go Girl   (Bet)   won
           2. Magic Number

.
.

RACE 4          LAST TYCOON STAKES GRADE 3

One mile and a eighth on the turf open to three year old's and up. A talented small field of six horses is the Grade 3 Last Tycoon.

I was impressed with Rookie Sensation...the winner over this course and distance last year. Son of Unbridled's Song earned a big Beyer number when he ran a mere prep for this race....the switch to Mike Smith is a major asset.

Quick Casablanca gets Lasix.........cuts back in distance...Ron has strung together long works which I love to see.......this race can up light on speed......which means that they will need to catch Fire With Fire......this time around the jockey's might not let him have a slow easy lead.

        1. Rookie Sensation
        2. Quick Casablanca    bet to place and show  won
        3. Lakerville

Long shot and the one to catch   Fire With Fire

RACE 5

A 12 G claimer sprinting six furlongs which is open to three year old's and up........I bet Courtside in his last race where he finished third.......He looks rank during the pre- race warm up and during the race...........Let's bet him again as I expect he will bounce back and be tough to deny here. Newfound Gold looked strong winning as he has won two straight.....seeks the hat trick today.......Let's try to beat him with Courtside.

               1. Courtside    (bet)   won
               2. Newfound Gold

Pick 4    $1.00  11 with 6,1 with 4,8 with 10

PAID $770.10

.

RACE 6

N1X allowance turf race sprinting down the hill for fillies and mare three year old and up.....a talented strong entry level allowance turf sprint.

Starry Skies on my watch list has two wins in three starts over this course......I have not seen her since 2012.....but Marty can get them to fire quick and ready to rumble down the lane. Mike Smith takes the call.....as her running style is a stone cold closer. Let's take a stand against her today......she looks like she might need a race before betting her.

Jerry sends out the import Hijara...who gets Lasix and the red hot rider Bejarano.

Velvet Mesquite loves this course and has a excellent turn of foot.......She has pace to run at and should take down this field ..........if the import from Jerry's barn might need a race under her belt.

          1. Velvet Mesquite   won
          2.  Hijara

RACE 7

One mile on the dirt is this optional claimer N1X for three year old's and up. A good betting race with the field of eight runner's. Bettys Bambino is unbeaten in his two starts........I was very impressed with how he won. He is bred to get the distance on the top and bottom of the pedigree. Peter has puts strong works in the morning.

The pace looks quick and fast as Magic Mark......and Garen to press a quick early pace.  Magic Mark is the one to catch. I Don't Care Who a gelding trained by Jeff Mullins has been a good claim....His last race he was in the nine post........this post will suit his running style.....as he was nine wide all around the track......I expect that will not happen today......as Tyler who has been red hot.......cuts back in distance........check out the bullet work.

The pace should be Magic Mark sired by Benchmark is the one to catch.......if no one goes with this one.....no one will catch him. He is on my watch list as I bet him in his last race...He was rank during warm up and rank during the race......I expect this time they will just send him to the lead..........Let's take him on top....with my long shot Honduras as second.......He cuts back in distance...as Cerin takes off the blinkers today......Corey rides is a major plus.

         1. Magic Mark  (Bet to win and place)  won
         2. Honduras

RACE 8

A maiden claimer at 50 G's at the distance of one mile which will include three year old's and up. A big field of 11 runners makes this race a good betting race.

The three year old filly Kozani bred top to bottom for the turf gets the short straw as she draws post ten. She cuts back in distance after running one mile and a eighth........Sadler trains her as she is running her third race after a three month freshening. First time in for a tag.......She has a excellent turn of foot...........Misdeed first time in for a tag gets Joe to ride.

         1. Kozani     Bet     won
         2. Misdeed

LAST TYCOON STAKES

Santa Anita set for first spring-summer meet By Steve Andersen

A new era begins at Santa Anita at 3 p.m. Pacific on Friday. The racetrack will launch its first spring-summer meeting, racing during dates previously held by Hollywood Park, which closed last December.

For fans of live racing at Santa Anita, the spring-summer meeting will mean more of the same. The track closed its winter-spring meeting only last Sunday and will race an additional 40 days through June 29. The two combined seasons are the longest stretch of live racing in the history of the 80-year-old venue.

Keeping the interest of racing fans – and avoiding venue fatigue – for the upcoming season is foremost on the mind of Tom Ludt, who took over as track president in March.

“It’s a challenge of marketing and creativity to get people to come to the track with six months in the same place,” he said.

To do so, Santa Anita has made some changes.

Post times on most Fridays will be 3 p.m., an effort to lure an audience ready to leave work early and get a head start on the weekend. Those programs are expected to end around 6:30 p.m. One exception will be May 2, when racing begins at 12:30 p.m. to accommodate the simulcast of the Kentucky Oaks program from Churchill Downs.

On weekends, admission to the infield will be free, with track officials hoping to entice families and casual fans. To gain free admission to the infield, customers must enter via Gate 6, off Colorado Place.

“We want to get people out,” Ludt said. “The feedback has been great. We’ll see if that translates into people coming out. We want to create an environment. People started going to the races with their dads. It’s a long-term plan to get families coming out here – throw a towel down, have a picnic, and have fun.”

On the racetrack, the product will be largely unchanged from the winter-spring meeting. Jockeys Rafael Bejarano, Joe Talamo, and Tyler Baze and trainers Jerry Hollendorfer, John Sadler, and Bob Baffert are expected to top the standings in their respective divisions, as they did at the winter-spring meeting. Game On Dude, who won the Santa Anita Handicap in March, is a leading candidate in stakes for older horses.

Santa Anita will host live racing on the Triple Crown days of the Kentucky Derby on May 3, Preakness Stakes on May 17, and Belmont Stakes on June 7, afternoons expected to be the best attended of the season.

Many stakes from past Hollywood Park spring-summer meetings will be run during this meeting, some with different names.

The $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 28, the richest race of the meeting, was run as the Hollywood Gold Cup in past years. The American Oaks, Gamely Stakes, Shoemaker Mile, Vanity Stakes, and Charles Whittingham Stakes have kept the same names and conditions.

Six months of racing between late December and late June will take a toll on the turf course, but racing secretary Rick Hammerle expects no disruption to the turf racing program. He noted that the abbreviated schedule at the end of the winter-spring meet gave him a chance to rest the course.

“I feel confident that the turf course will be in excellent shape,” he said. “The break we’ve had has allowed us to do some maintenance.”

Friday’s first race is a maiden race for 2-year-old fillies over 4 1/2 furlongs. The meet’s 2-year-old program leads to two $125,000 stakes June 22, the Santa Anita Juvenile and the Landaluce.

For bettors, one significant change will be the resumption of $2 rolling doubles, beginning with the first race through the second-to-last race each day. Rolling doubles were not offered at the winter-spring meeting, replaced by three daily doubles per day with a reduced takeout of 18 percent.

For the spring-summer meeting, the rolling doubles will have an 18 percent takeout, down from 22.68 percent when last offered at the 2013 autumn meeting.
