SAN FELIPE

Trainer Bob Baffert confirmed March 1 that imposing colt Dortmund, the second choice in the most recent Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool, will start in the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park March 7.

The race is on the undercard of the featured $1 million Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I), which will be headlined by champion Shared Belief.

Baffert earlier expressed concern keeping Dortmund, a son of Big Brown  out of racing too long before the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) April 4, but said he still plans to run the Kaleem Shah-owned colt in that prep for the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

"He came out of the (Robert B. Lewis Stakes, gr. III) pretty well," Baffert said of Dortmund's most recent race Feb. 7. "We just didn't want to keep him just training for another month."

Almost 17 hands, the Kentucky-bred out of Tale of the Cat   mare Our Josephina, is undefeated in four starts, including back-to-back wins in the Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita and the Los Alamitos Futurity (gr. I) Dec. 20.

he plans on running Peachtree Stable's San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) winner Lord Nelson in the San Felipe, as well. The Pulpit colt drew some attention in the San Vicente, when he edged Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Texas Red by a neck Feb. 1.
