NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND THIS WEEK-END RACES

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 13, 2014)—Sweet Swap and Joe Talamo are good for each other. Ridden for the second time in-a-row in Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 San Simeon Stakes by Talamo, the 5 year-old horse by Candy Ride followed his Feb. 23 Joe Hernandez Stakes win down the hillside turf course with a diminishing half length tally on Sunday over the late-charging Lakerville as he negotiated the 6 ½ furlongs down the hill in 1:11.59.
Two-time Eclipse Award Champion filly Beholder towers over six older fillies and mares in next Sunday’s $75,000 Santa Lucia Stakes at 1 1/16 miles, her first start since winning the Grade I, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 1.
ARCADIA, Calif. (April 13, 2014)—Stormy Lucy and Rafael Bejarano have developed a very successful relationship. Ridden for the second time in-a-row by Santa Anita’s leading jockey, the 5-year-old mare by Stormy Atlantic followed her win in the Grade II Santa Ana Stakes at Santa Anita March 16 with a thrilling come-from-behind neck victory in Sunday’s Grade III, $150,000 Santa Barbara Handicap as she negotiated 1 ¼ miles on turf in 1:58.73.

In a thrilling finish, California-bred Big Macher, with Tyler Baze aboard, prevailed by a nose over favored Wild Dude and Rafael Bejarano in Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Potrero Grande Stakes, covering 6 ½ furlongs in 1:14.97.
